Position contingent upon funding General Information: The Schuchman Center and the History program inside the School of Arts & Humanities invites applications for a joint tenure-track faculty position to create, teach undergraduate courses in Digital History, and carry out work at the Schuchman Center. This tenure-track appointment position holds a joint appointment between the Schuchman Center (66.66% time) and the School of Arts & Humanities (33.33% time). Specific fields of specialization matching current program needs will be considered, as specified below under “qualifications.” The initial appointment will begin on August 16, 2021. Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) is highly desirable, but not required. However, applicants who do not know ASL must be willing to learn, and eventually must satisfy the language requirements specified in the University’s Faculty Handbook. Candidates must demonstrate potential for competence in teaching and scholarship, and be willing to accept service responsibilities. Rank and salary are commensurate with experience and qualifications. Qualifications:
PhD or able to document close to completing PhD in digital history, multimedia history, or allied field. The ideal candidate should have some background in documentary studies, multi-media production, digital humanities, or oral history. Excellent personal and communication skills, ability to work independently and collaboratively, ability to travel when necessary for work. College undergraduate teaching experience is strongly preferred. Responsibilities: Provides leadership for public history and digital media initiatives of the Schuchman Deaf Documentary Center (SDDC); develops cross-discipline web-based digital presentations of cultural and historic content researched by the SDDC; builds digital humanities capacity and provides public history expertise for Gallaudet University. These include: supervising production of educational outreach materials of the SDDC, develop online materials using current and emerging history tools; shares resources with the campus community; works closely with the SDDC Director to seek external, Federal, and private funding, develops and coordinate marketing plans for SDDC as it relates to digital or public history products. The candidate is expected to meet the University evaluation requirements for teaching, research, and service and those of the History Program and School of Arts and Humanities. They are expected to teach one course every semester in the primary field of expertise of Digital or Public History. They should also expect to develop and teach courses in conjunction with the History Program, and/or other allied fields. Their courses should highlight how digital research and presentation augments historical scholarship; works closely with interns and supervises students assigned to specific projects. They should engage in scholarly activities and research in their field of expertise and participate in service activities for the program, school, and university.
