The Hankey Center for The History of Women’s Education and C. Elizabeth Boyd ’33 Archives is an endowed unit of Wilson College with a mission to promote the study of women’s history and education. Reporting to the Dean of Academic Affairs, this 12 month, non-tenure track position will include administrative and leadership responsibilities as Director of the Hankey Center and faculty responsibilities in History with an annual three course teaching load. The appointment will begin in August 2023.
DIRECTOR’S RESPONSIBILITIES: The Director will have strategic leadership responsibilities for the Hankey Center. Duties will include initiating and designing programming; promoting the center, it’s research potential, and its programs to campus and external stakeholders; coordinating with faculty on special projects and student research in the center; managing the center’s budget; and supervising programs and staff, including a full-time Archivist as well as occasional part-time staff and graduate interns. The Director will coordinate with the Office of Advancement and with the college’s Alumni Association on events and outreach.
FACULTY RESPONSIBILITIES: The Director will teach three courses per year, including the two-course American History sequence and an additional upper-division or graduate course. Ongoing scholarship/professional development is expected, but broadly construed to include public-facing scholarship, creative work, physical and digital exhibitions, and scholarly service in regional or national organizations, as well as research leading to scholarly publications. Service on college committees, advising and mentoring of students, and service to the community are expected of all Wilson faculty members.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: A PhD in modern American History or American Studies with a specialization in Public and/or Women’s History. Demonstrated experience using primary sources and archival research. Substantial teaching experience; evidence of teaching excellence. Commitment to diversity and inclusion practices.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Working knowledge of archives databases and platforms. Interest in digital humanities and museums/curation. Scholarly/teaching interest in gender and sexuality or race and ethnicity.
APPOINTMENT AS ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR: To be appointed at the rank of Associate Professor, the candidate must have held the rank of Assistant Professor for at least five years (at any accredited college or university) and meet expectations for teaching excellence and scholarly/professional productivity appropriate to the rank of Associate Professor.
