The College of Liberal Arts departments of History and Africana Studies at Drew University are seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor of 18th and 19th century U.S. history within the broader Africana context.
Key Responsibilities:
- Teach an introductory-level course in the history of the United States, from contact to 1877
- Teach an intermediate-level course in African American history, from African origins to 1877
- Teach courses at the intermediate- and upper-level that relate to African American and general American History.
- Work collaboratively with faculty across the university whose research and teaching are concerned with related fields such as Africa and the African diaspora, Early modern world, Social and cultural identity
- Engaged in scholarship on 18th/19th C African American History.
Required Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in 18th and 19th century U.S. history within the broader Africana context. Scholarship that focuses on African American or Africana life and history. Teaching experience in the above areas is also extremely important for the successful candidate.
Desired Skills and Experience:
We seek candidates who have depth and breadth in the study of 18th and 19th century United States history and its Africana context, and who are passionate about innovative teaching within a liberal arts context. The successful candidate must be able to teach undergraduate courses on 18th and 19th century U.S. history, African American history, and historical research methods. In addition to excellent teaching, candidates will be expected to maintain an active program of scholarship, and to contribute to the university community through mentoring and advising students, co-curricular planning, collaboration across disciplines, committee service,
and leadership at Drew. The successful candidate should also be prepared to work actively with the Africana studies program in terms of mentorship and co-curricular engagement with students.
