Position Overview
The Department of History, Anthropology and Classics at Butler University invites applications for a full-time Lecturer in History. We are seeking a historian of a Global South area—Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and/or Oceania—whose teaching and scholarship focuses on one or more themes: migration, movement & diaspora; race, gender & sexuality; social movements; the environment, including urban history; or empire, colonialism, and post-colonialism. Applicants should have a strong commitment to inclusive undergraduate teaching, and their expertise should complement the department’s present strengths.
The ideal candidate incorporates a transnational approach to teaching and research, engages with interdisciplinary approaches and issues of social justice and diversity, and will help build an inclusive learning environment for our increasingly diverse student population. Inclusive and evidence-based pedagogy is expected at Butler University.
The successful candidate will teach two Global and Historical Studies course sections and two undergraduate history courses each semester. Global and Historical Studies seeks to help students recognize the role of human interactions in shaping diverse identities and inequalities; to develop knowledge about historical moments, peoples, and places; and to better understand the relationship between the past and the present.
This faculty member could choose to affiliate with the International Studies; Peace and Conflict Studies; Race, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; and/or Science, Technology, and Environmental Studies interdisciplinary programs.
Applicants should have earned a doctorate in History before August 1, 2024.

The successful candidate will start August 2024, subject to final budgetary approval.
