The Department of History at Bucknell University invites applicants for a tenure track appointment, beginning in August 2025, at the rank of Assistant Professor in the history of Europe and the Mediterranean World. Review of applications will begin September 16, 2024. The successful candidate must have their Ph.D. in history by August 20, 2025. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong potential as both a teacher and a scholar. Both their research and teaching should cover some portion of the period from 700 CE to 1700 CE. Candidates who can contribute to our ongoing departmental conversations about race, ethnic and religious identities, gender, sexuality, slavery, social justice, empire, colonialism, migration, and global connections are particularly encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate will teach courses about Europe and the Mediterranean before 1700 and the relationship between the region and the wider world. The new colleague should have a robust and imaginative research agenda that models the values of historical understanding. Examples of such expansive areas of research interests could include the transformation of Christianity and Islam amid the Crusades, the dissemination of the commercial and scientific knowledge of the Arabic Mediterranean, maritime technology and seafaring in the Dutch commercial empire, the discourse and practices of colonization as understood in Portugal, Spain, and/or France, the intellectual and social assumptions of the scientific revolution, innovations in urban imagination and design in port cities of the Mediterranean, or a comparative analysis of legal regimes in early modern states. The new colleague will be expected to contribute to departmental life and the landscape of the humanities at Bucknell and beyond.
To apply, please submit a cover letter addressing your teaching philosophy and scholarly expertise; C.V.; and a chapter-length writing sample.
