The Amherst College Department of History, together with the college’s Department of Asian Languages and Civilizations invites applications for a full-time, one-year visiting position in Middle Eastern history at the rank of assistant professor, beginning July 1, 2025. The teaching load for this position is two courses per semester. There is a possibility of renewal contingent upon the needs of the department and positive reviews of teaching and other responsibilities.
Preference is for a historian of the Arabic-speaking Middle East, with research specialization in any sub-area and time period. The candidate is expected to offer both lower-level survey courses and upper-level more specialized courses that would appeal widely to both majors and non-majors who are interested in study of the Middle East. Of the four total courses, the expectation is that two each would be devoted to modern (post-1800) and pre-modern (pre-1800) Middle Eastern history. Additional responsibilities include participation in the life of the departments, and a willingness to advise student senior theses.
Interested candidates should review the application requirements and submit electronically to http://apply.interfolio.com/161865 the following materials: a cover letter highlighting their research and teaching, a curriculum vitae, two academic letters of reference, and two sample syllabi of possible courses. Please note that we do not have set courses that need to be taught, and the candidate is welcome to generate new courses in their area of specialty. For this reason, candidates should familiarize themselves with what we currently offer, and articulate ways in which they would extend and enrich, rather than duplicate, the existing curriculum. Review of applications will begin Friday, February 14, 2025, and continue until the position is filled.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in hand by the start of the appointment. Candidates must demonstrate strong potential for excellence in teaching and scholarship, preferably through an established track-record of effective undergraduate teaching in Middle East history, as well as through a record of published or in-progress scholarship commensurate with the candidate’s professional stage.
Inquiries and questions regarding the nature of the position, and technical questions regarding the submission of applicant materials should be directed to the Department of History at Amherst College (history@amherst.edu).
