Chief Executive Officer Cotuit, MA
The Cahoon Museum of American Art has served the Cotuit community, Cape Cod, and greater New England continuously since 1984, providing a rich experience of 19th, 20th, and 21st century American art unlike any other institution in the area. The Cahoon is housed in a pre-Revolutionary War structure erected in 1775 by Ebenezer Crocker, one of the seven 18th century buildings located at the intersection of Route 28 and 130 in Cotuit, Massachusetts.
Heralded for its imaginative programming and creative shows, the Cahoon thoughtfully juxtaposes the old and the new, marrying historic and contemporary pieces in a way that situates the work of living artists within a broader narrative context and which proffers a novel perspective while remaining respectful of the artistic antecedents that created space for new ideas to emerge. The Cahoon mounts six to eight major exhibitions annually, serves a growing population of children and adults with a rich variety of art education programs, and hosts dozens of artist talks and presentations.
The CEO of the Cahoon Museum of American Art is responsible for leading the museum in pursuing its mission, achieving its strategic and operational goals, and enhancing the museum's reputation and amplifying its impact. In partnership with a committed Board of Directors and a talented staff, the CEO will build on the legacy of the Cahoons, their work, and the historic property on which the Museum is located in order to lead the organization's pursuit of the five core pillars embedded in its Strategic Plan: People and Culture; Infrastructure and Investments; Visibility and Branding; Fundraising and Financial Strength; and Learning and Engagement.
The Cahoon Museum of American Art seeks an accomplished organizational leader with a demonstrated track record of building enduring relationships, engaging artists and audiences, and leading high-capacity teams in the successful pursuit of an organization's strategic objectives. The CEO will be a strategic leader who fuses a long-term vision for the museum's impact with a keen understanding of how to build the internal capacity and external resources necessary to actualize that vision. A dynamic communicator and compelling storyteller with a sincere enthusiasm for public speaking and community engagement, this leader will galvanize support for the museum's collections, exhibitions, and educational programs among visitors, donors, and community members.
A bachelor's degree in a relevant field is required. A master's degree is preferred. 8-10 years of progressive, relevant experience in leadership roles, particularly in museums, historic homes, or other cultural organizations, is essential. Previous executive-level achievement within a nonprofit organization is required. While a background as a curator or art historian is not essential, the leader must possess an evident passion for the mission of the Cahoon Museum. Experiencing having led a successful capital campaign is required.
The compensation range for this position annually is between $130,000 - $145,000. Health, PTO and other benefits are available. This is a full-time, in-person role based in Cotuit, Massachusetts.
The cover letter is an opportunity to showcase your passion for Cahoon Museum of American Art's vision and mission, as well as organizational impact in current or prior roles.
For best consideration, please submit a letter of introduction and current resume to Kittleman & Associates, LLC by December 19, 2025.
