The Department of History at the University of Utah invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship in the history of modern Latin America and its relationship with other world regions (including the US and Canada, as well as Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and/or the Pacific), and with thematic strengths in such areas as migration, capitalism, technology, global health, diplomacy, infrastructure, and/or the environment. The position is integral to a new International and Area Studies curriculum development initiative within the College of Humanities. Competitive applicants will have a research and teaching profile with a strong global focus, and have a demonstrated commitment to research and to research-informed teaching at all levels of the undergraduate and graduate curriculum. The teaching load is two courses per semester. Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate and graduate courses in global Latin America, as well as (on a rotating basis) an undergraduate course that critically engages with area studies frameworks, an undergraduate course on historical methods, and a survey of modern Latin America.
History faculty have opportunities to participate in the University’s Interdisciplinary programs in Latin American Studies, International Studies, Asian Studies, and Middle East Studies. Both the Center for Latin American Studies and the Asia Center are Title VI National Resource Centers (NRCs) and provide students with some of the nation’s most extensive support for language study abroad through Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships. The University of Utah is a national leader in Classical and Modern Nahuatl language and cultural studies, with a summer language institute and academic year course offerings.
The PhD is preferred but ABD candidates are encouraged to apply. Applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, and writing sample no later than October 18, 2024. All applicants will be required to submit names and email addresses for letters of recommendation. If the applicant is selected for the first round of interviews, the references will be notified to submit a letter.
