The Department of History at the University of California, Irvine, invites applications for the newly inaugurated Charles Quilter Endowed Chair in the History of Technology at the rank of advanced assistant, associate, or full professor, beginning in July 2026. The position is open to all chronological periods and geographic specializations. We especially welcome candidates whose research complements and/or extends existing departmental strengths in environmental history, the history of science and medicine, world history, gender, labor, indigeneity, disability, and/or race.
The Quilter Chair will contribute to the department’s undergraduate and graduate program, and fulfill service obligations commensurate with their rank. The ideal candidate will also be interested in program building to promote the history of technology and related disciplines within the School of Humanities and UC Irvine more broadly.
For the initial review, candidates should submit a letter of application, CV, and contact information for three references. The letter of application should address the candidate’s past and projected contributions to research, teaching, and service.
